They said we were crazy for scheduling a run in December. Fair enough. It was twenty degrees when we gathered at Fountain Park, and the wind coming off Lake Michigan made it feel colder. But thirty-one people showed up anyway, bundled in layers and blowing into their hands, grinning like it was the most normal thing in the world.
We shortened the route to two and a half miles out of respect for the cold. The sidewalks were mostly clear, though there were a few icy patches that turned the run into more of a careful shuffle in places. Everyone stayed close together, partly for warmth and partly because winter running just feels more communal.
The real magic happened at the finish. A local bakery had set up a hot chocolate station with homemade marshmallows, and a taco truck parked nearby was serving birria tacos that warmed us from the inside out. People lingered even longer than usual, maybe because nobody wanted to walk back to their cars in the cold, or maybe because the vibe was just that good.
This was the run that proved we are not a fair-weather club. Rain, snow, wind, whatever. If you show up, we show up. And honestly, some of the best memories come from the runs where the conditions are the worst. There is something about surviving a cold run together that bonds people faster than a perfect seventy-degree morning ever could.
